Inspirational Magazines- Blog #25

Welcome Back!

In this blog, I will show you what magazines I am using to inspire my own magazine. My team and I decided on using Vogue as our inspiration magazine. My main source of inspiration is Pinterest, “A visual discovery engine for finding ideas like recipes, home and style inspiration, and more.”

First, while creating my survey, the magazine that stuck out to me was the one shown below:

The “Vogue” in big lettering, either in front or behind the subject is often a trend in Vogue magazines. This detail will be added in my final magazine cover. As well as the name of my subject printed across the bottom of the page and a direct quote under the subjects name. This unique Vogue format and style will be the biggest inspiration in my groups magazines.

Secondly, I searched “ Vogue inspired table of contents” on Pinterest to find inspiration for my table of contents. What I chose will be shown below:

The big print for the title and numbers, different font sizes, and the format of the pictures were very big inspirations for my magazine’s table of contents. I made sure my pictures coincide with the stories listed on my table of contents.

Finally, I searched “ Vogue inspired double-page spreads” and what stuck out to me was the one shown below:

This double-page spread stuck out to me the most because it looks a lot more professional and classy, which is my ideal look for a fashion magazine.

Genre Pt.2 - Blog #24

Welcome Back!

Magazine genres refer to the different types of magazines that can be created on certain topics. Topics such as the ones I will mention in this blog, cooking, art, fashion, and travel magazines. Each magazine is based on a certain topic to provide information, entertainment, etc,. The writer of each type of magazine usually has knowledge on that topic because they are in that field or they’ve done research. I will explain in depth below.

Cooking magazines

Cooking magazines are usually categorized as informational because it contains recipes, however entertainment can be considered as aspect as well. The person writing these kinds of magazines are usually chefs, home cooks, bakers, or someone with a cooking background. Publishing the end result of those recipes can be fun  to see. This is also a good marketing trait because it could be motivating to see how beautiful the end result is, so much so that you would want to recreate that. According to themegrill.com, recipes aren’t the only thing that is being published in a cooking magazine. Recently, people have incorporated specific ingredients and it’s nutritional value and cooking tool recommendations. In addition, like I mentioned in the beginning, cooking magazines usually contain many pictures of aesthetic or styled food.

Art magazines

Art is considerably always part of every magazine, a magazine without pictures is not attractive because people need to see with their eyes first what they are reading about before actually reading it. Especially because art is always so attractive because it’s usually very intricate, deep, or surreal, it really attracts a wide audience. In addition, art isn’t just paintings, it could be considered a very wide spectrum. Anything considered art is fair game. Topics such as music or dancing is also considered art and can be put in an art magazine. An art magazine would usually also mention the artist and their background, as well as the intention behind the art.

Fashion magazines

Fashion magazines are usually a very popular type of magazine genre. This type of magazine wouldn’t just involve clothes and styling tips, there is a lot more then that. If you are writing a fashion magazine, you probably already know a lot about fashion by watching red carpets  and seeing celebrities in their intricate clothing, this includes the brand they are representing. Something that compliments clothing is the makeup, a if you study clothing on red carpets, you can’t help but notice their extravagant makeup and eye designs. In addition, if you are avid about writing a fashion magazine, it’s most likely you are already creating your own brand of clothing or makeup products so a fashion magazine would be a great way to market your stuff. Overall, a fashion magazine wouldnt only contain clothes, it would contain trending fashion brands, pictures of celebrity clothing, make-up recommendations, and fashion trends.

Travel magazines

Travel magazines tend to be very informational because it gives vital information about places you can visit for vacation, however, their is also an entertainment aspect because travel magazines usually contain vivid pictures of beautiful places all other the world. Of course, a lot of travel magazines are biased they they could be funded by a certain location to promote their spot as “the best vacation spot”. This is true however there is much more to a travel magazine. Very few are unbiased but those that are can be pretty useful and informational. They dont just talk about places to visit and publish a couple of pictures, travel magazines include places to eat, lodge, attractions, affordability, etc. Travel magazines may also contain testimonials about real people who have been there and they’re recounting on being at that location. There could also be suggested guides and “top ten places to go when visiting…”, stuff like that.

Genre Pt.1 - Blog #23

Welcome Back!

The magazine categories I will talk about in this blog are umbrella terms for certain magazine genres I will mention in the next blog.

General interest

TIME, Vogue, People, The New Yorker

General interest magazines are just what the name says it is, general. These types of magazines contain a general range of topics. It isn’t specified to a certain audience, it’s for anyone who is willing to pick up a magazine. It’s not a specified magazine like a fashion magazine or a cooking magazine, it’s a magazine that involves everything from drama to fashion to cooping recipes. It’s produces based on a general and wide audience with general interests. Magazines such as TIME or Vouge are good examples of a general magazine.  Vouge for example is considered a fashion magazine but in the cover page, there are many feature stories that don’t pertain to fashion but other topics such as drama, health, art, cooking, etc.

Special interest

Sports Magazine, Business Magazine, Food Magazine, Gardening Magazine

Special interest magazines aren’t as general, they attract specified audiences and contain specified topics. For example, a cooking magazine that contains recipes and cooking tool recommendations and things that only pertain to cooking. As long as the magazine is a specific genre and it contains features relating to that genre, then that could be called a special interest magazine.

Professional interest.

Trade Magazine, Automotive Magazine, Agriculture Magazine, Doctorate Magazine

Professional magazines have the same concept as special interest magazines, they both contain narrowed topics for a narrowed audience. Professional magazines however, are for professionals. Therefore, the audience would consist of people who are in that same profession and who would understand the terms, jargon, and specified language involved in that profession. For example, a magazine about health would consist of medical terms, doctor recommendations, information about health, etc.

Overall, these discussed magazine genres are the general terms of spherical genres which will be discussed in the next blog.

House Style Pt.3 - Blog #22

Welcome Back!

Welcome back!

In this blog, I will be showing how I use house style in my magazine. I will be speaking on the specific elements used to create that house style.

*insert pictures

masthead: my masthead is in dark green, bolded lettering and it is placed in the middle of the page. This is going to set the color and the theme of following pages of the magazine. Notice how in the next two pages, the masthead is in its same green, big lettering and its centering in the middle of the page. That’s is the trend I’m going for. Overall I used the masthead to create my brand for my magazine. “ OH THE PLACES SHE’LL GO”, like I mentioned in my last blogs, I wanted to create a Dr.Seuss theme, which I have now recently learned is part of creating my house style.

font: the font all throughout the magazine is in the same family, in some parts of the magazine the font is either big or small, bolded or italicized, either way it looks like it is the same font all throughout the magazine. The only exception is in the table of contents, I kept the same font for the numbers because I thought it would stand out more and I used a different font for “LUGGINA”. This is where I used the font, to continue that dr.Seuss theme.

color: the color all throughout are different shades of green along with a little bit of a beige to add a touch of something different. This is to create a retro 2000s look in order to attract a younger audience to what I am writing about. This will definitely show the reader that my magazine will use green all through the magazine and expect no less.

picture proportions/placements: I didn’t want the picture to take up too much of the page however, I did want it to be in the middle as well as have a retro effect by being placed in a slanted oval frame. I wanted the audience to know who the magazine was about but also focus on the headlines and subheadings and masthead. This picture placement and frame is shown al, through the magazine as seen in the next pages. The pictures are placed in obscure frames which make it seem modern and have a sort of organized tone to the whole magazine.

barcode/date: in order to create a more professional but also young looking magazine I made sure the barcode and issue date wasn’t missed at all when looking at the magazine. The reader will be able to find the price of my magazine and when it was created to see if it is “in its time”.

grammar/jargon: throughout the whole magazine I made sure I used enough high frequency words, an other way to show the audience that this magazine is more for the youth.

Overall, the house style of my magazine consists of the color green and its various shades, the trend of the masthead, but most of all, the Dr.Seuss trend all throughout my magazine.

House Style Pt.2 - Blog #21

Welcome Back!

In this blog, I will be using a specific magazine as an example to showcase house style. This magazine was my inspiration for the magazine I am currently planning.

Magazine: TIME

What is time magazine?

TIME’s mission is to provide trusted guidance about the ideas and people who shape and improve the world. This promise lives at the center of our award-winning editorial work, fast-growing new divisions, innovative new products, and partner solutions.” -TIME

*insert pictures

These are examples of TIME magazine. They are to bring attention to TIME’s most significant house style.

The masthead is what gives TIME’s its most significant trend. It is in big, capital letters, probably in Roman font. But the clearest detail is the picture in contrast with the masthead. What I have noticed is if the picture has a subject in an obscure position or it isn’t a close-up shot of their face, them the masthead will disappear slightly behind the subject (as seen in the magazine with Taylor Swift or Gitanjali).

However, if the picture is a close-up shot of the subjects face then the masthead would most likely overpass the subjects forehead (as seen in the magazine with  Steve Jobs or Elon Musk)

This specific issue from TIME magazine is called “person of the Year”. It is a magazine that keeps the trend of having specifically one subject completely covering the cover page along with its branded masthead.

Next up, Pt.3!

House Style Pt.1 - Blog #20

Welcome Back!

Today we will be talking about house style. This blog will be the first of a three part series. This blog will explain House Style in general.

House style is an element that is used all throughout magazines to create a trend. This helps give the magazine familiarity with its audience along with creating its brand to to give it credibility and allow it to be recognizable. It’s a very useful element which creates and assigns an identity to its magazine.

Things such as the masthead, font, color, picture proportions, placements, subheading, barcode, date, grammar, jargon, etc. These things can help establish a magazines house style.

The masthead is the first thing the readers read on a magazine. This can also be viewed as the title or the brand of the magazine. Either way, the way the masthead is placed on the magazine, it’s position/placement, color, size, all of this will begin the brand for its magazine and will make its identity recognizable to its audience.

The font and its size can say a lot about the type of magazine and how the audience reads the magazine. For example, if the font throughout the magazine was a playful, bubbly font( shown below), it would be viewed as a kiddy magazine or maybe a baking magazine. On the other hand, if the magazine is presented with a professional and clean type of font, it’s audience would be given the impression of the magazine being about business or politics. Therefore, house style is an important element to use to set a magazines style to make it recognizable to its audience.

The color is what most attracts the eye of the reader. Colors can have significant meanings and can provoke specific emotions. It can attract a specific audience with its bright colors such as kids, young adults or it can attract adults with more serious colors such as black or grey. The color doesn’t even have to be specific to a certain age or gender, that is why color is so important, it has a broad range to attract a larger audience.

The picture proportions/ placements contribute to the main idea of the magazine, or the main subject. Depending where the picture is, how big, etc., this would play a big role in creating the identity of the magazine. For example, if the picture takes up the whole cover, behind the masthead, subheadings, etc., this would become its trademark. Therefore, when a reader sees this cover, they would immediately recognize it from the picture taking up the whole page. Usually fashion magazines cover the whole page with its cover picture, behind the masthead, subheadings, magazine kicker, date, barcode, etc. This is one of the ways magazines like VOUGE, a fashion magazine, is recognized by its audience.

The grammar and jargon used in a magazine is crucial to identifying its target audience. For example, if a magazine is meant for kids, the grammar and jargon used would be modern and high frequency. On the other hand, if a magazine was meant for business and economic interests, there would be low frequency words and the jargon would be understand only by people who know business and economic terms.

The barcode and date placement can also establish a magazines house style. For example, on Entertainment Weekly, it’s barcode is on the plastic covering, not on the magazine itself. It’s buyers would already know this as it is different from other magazines and it is known to have it so it’s buyers will look for it in its plastic covering.

Overall, the house style is a very important element for a magazine. Not only to keep its consistent but also to build a brand and make it recognizable to its buyers.

Now for Pt.2!

History of a Magazine Pt.3 - Blog #19

Welcome Back!

This blog will be the last part of my ‘History of a Magazine’ blogs.

20th-Century Developments

Now we are fast forwarding to the 20th-century. The 20th-century brought on a whole new generation of magazines. By the 1900s, magazines already expanded to attract wider audiences and to have an increase in circulation to decrease issue prices. This already brought on a whole new span of readers and brought popularity to magazines in general. By this time, it doesn’t seem like the magazine business can improve anymore. However, in the 20th-century, new types of magazines started being introduced. This included news, business, and picture magazines. As a result, these types of magazines seemed to attract a whole new audience of readers and dominated the industry as a whole.

News/ Business magazines

As the world started developing, so did magazines. Magazines are meant to document and update people on what is happening in the world and make it interesting so people would want to read it. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, technology started advancing but not many people knew much about it. Technology made worldwide information very accessible, so publishers took advantage and created magazines based on this newfound information. These magazines were called the newsmagazine.

The first newsmagazine was in 1923 called Time. This magazine focused on world news. The purpose of this magazine was introduced with Time releasing their first publication with the proposition that “people are uninformed because no publication has adapted itself to the time which busy men are able to spend simply keeping informed”. At first, Time had a rough start, but in 1928, it’s popularity and audience grew due to the magazine’s well-researched information and it’s clear presentation.

Business magazines that started coming in as well:

  • Business Week was founded in 1929 with a focus on the global market
  • Forbes, currently one of the most popular financial magazines, began printing in 1917 as a biweekly publication
  • In 1933, a former Time foreign editor founded Newsweek, which now has a circulation of nearly 4 million readers

Recently:

  • Newsweek and Time continue to compete with each other, furthering a trend that began in the early years of Newsweek.

Picture Magazines: photojournalism

Photojournalism:the telling of stories through photography

Since the 19th century, illustrations in magazines have already been done (ex. The Saturday Evening Post). However, as much as illustrations were popular and “modern” at that time, photography grew going into the 20th century, which led to picture magazines growing in popularity. This was also called photojournalism (definition seen above).

Henry Luce’s Life: characterized as “the most influential picture magazine”. Published between 1936 and 1972.

The most interesting thing about this magazine is its purpose and format. With 96 large-format glossy pages and the opening photograph showed an obstetrician holding a newborn baby with the caption “Life begins.” A huge photograph on the cover in glossy pages wasn’t typical for a magazine. It attracted people just by its looks.

The purpose was very attracting as well, “to see life; to see the world; to witness great events; to watch the faces of the poor and the gestures of the proud; to see strange things”, said their publication. This purpose seemed grand and important, despite being contained in a magazine basically at the world’s fingertips, it was a new spread of information which couldn’t be ignored. Life was said to have established photojournalism. This fact was evident from Life having a circulation of 1 million.

Even though Life was a very popular magazine, it wasn’t the only one of its kind.

Look : biweekly picture magazine, printed between 1937 and 1971.

Look claimed to be Life’s competition because they reach a bigger audience. It’s popularity came from its similar format and style to Life. So, Look did become stiff competition however, Life was the original trendsetter which maintained loyal popularity all throughout.

Many more magazines which followed Life’s trend:

  • Focus
  • Peek
  • Foto
  • Pic
  • Click

Into the 21st Century: The modern magazine

From the 20th century to the 21st century, magazines have had to adapt to the the evolution of technology. This change has given access to an even bigger audience because it reaches a wider spread of people all around the world. Publishers did have to change the structure, techniques, and perhaps format of their magazines to place them online however this small inconvenience would lead to an increasing online market.
