Genre Pt.1 - Blog #23

Welcome Back!

The magazine categories I will talk about in this blog are umbrella terms for certain magazine genres I will mention in the next blog.

General interest

TIME, Vogue, People, The New Yorker

General interest magazines are just what the name says it is, general. These types of magazines contain a general range of topics. It isn’t specified to a certain audience, it’s for anyone who is willing to pick up a magazine. It’s not a specified magazine like a fashion magazine or a cooking magazine, it’s a magazine that involves everything from drama to fashion to cooping recipes. It’s produces based on a general and wide audience with general interests. Magazines such as TIME or Vouge are good examples of a general magazine.  Vouge for example is considered a fashion magazine but in the cover page, there are many feature stories that don’t pertain to fashion but other topics such as drama, health, art, cooking, etc.

Special interest

Sports Magazine, Business Magazine, Food Magazine, Gardening Magazine

Special interest magazines aren’t as general, they attract specified audiences and contain specified topics. For example, a cooking magazine that contains recipes and cooking tool recommendations and things that only pertain to cooking. As long as the magazine is a specific genre and it contains features relating to that genre, then that could be called a special interest magazine.

Professional interest.

Trade Magazine, Automotive Magazine, Agriculture Magazine, Doctorate Magazine

Professional magazines have the same concept as special interest magazines, they both contain narrowed topics for a narrowed audience. Professional magazines however, are for professionals. Therefore, the audience would consist of people who are in that same profession and who would understand the terms, jargon, and specified language involved in that profession. For example, a magazine about health would consist of medical terms, doctor recommendations, information about health, etc.

Overall, these discussed magazine genres are the general terms of spherical genres which will be discussed in the next blog.
